the area
The department of the Dordogne is rich in castles, fortresses, prehistoric caves with rock paintings, picture book little towns with lively markets, art and culture. Even the vegetation is unique. Fields of nut trees, tobacco and sunflowers are ordered like a chessboard and gives the sensation of being in a large garden.
The Dordogne river snakes its way through the beautiful countryside and invites you to a motorboat free hike next to the water. The local cuisine is famous for its foie gras
(goose liver pàté), nut cake, strawberries, sheep cheese, truffles and of course wines from the vineyards in Cahors, Bordeaux and St. Emillion.
Bordeaux (international airport) is reached in a pleasant two hours drive and in only 2.5 hours you can reach Arcachon and bathe in the Atlantic or admire the highest sand dunes in Europe. Toulouse (international airport) is only 1.5 hours away. The airbus centre here is a must for technical freaks. In only 4 hours drive you can reach Spanish soil. An unforgettable experience in the direct vicinity is a visit to the Saturday market in Sarlat. This is really an explosion of all the senses (sight, taste, smell, hearing and touch).
